Sainsbury’s appoints former John Lewis boss to spearhead drive upmarket
J Sainsbury PLC (LON:SBRY) has appointed Paula Nickolds, the former head of John Lewis, to head its clothing and homewares division.
Nicklolds left the department store chain after three years in charge at the beginning of 2020 after profits were hit by the rise in online shopping.
At Sainsbury’s, Nickolds will be in charge of a £7.8bn division that includes Argo and Tu clothing and joins as the grocer is attempting to take some of its larger stores upmarket with a department store feel and more non-food ranges.
Nickolds worked for John Lewis for 25 years after starting as a graduate trainee and was its first female managing director.
Simon Roberts, Sainsbury’s chief executive, described Nickolds as a “highly respected, talented and experienced retail leader”.
Shares in Sainsbury’s eased slightly to 245.9p.
